Residents still say NO to new gateway - 12.05.06

Residents of Longhurst Road opposed to the creation of a new access point into Manor Park earlier this year are on the warpath once again.

A locally organised petition opposing the scheme to build a gateway into the Park via Longhurst Road was presented to Lewisham Council by Conservative Councillor David Britton earlier this year; then silence fell.

Subsequent enquiries to Lewisham's planning department were unable to obtain any further information about the scheme, but just a few days after the local elections on May 4th fresh rumours have began, suggesting that the proposal to build a new gateway is to be implemented despite local opposition.

Local Conservative campaigner Brian Chipps said "Local residents are dead against this proposal, it's an open invitation for gangs of youths to congregate and use the park as a cut-through; but Lewisham, as usual, seem to be set to ignore local feelings on this matter. I and my Conservative Team remain committed to helping local people fight this proposal and will be demanding to know why this scheme seems to have re-emerged only once the Local Elections are over."
