Round one to residents in Courts Development fight - 26/07/07

Southend Village residents were celebrating today as news broke that the appliciation to develop the Courts site on the junction of Whitefoot Lane and Bromley Road had been turned down by Lewisham planners.

The refusal followed a massive campaign by local residents, supported by Whitefoot Conservatives, to stop the plan for the high-density, high-rise development.

Conservative campaigner Tom Philpott said:

"I am delighted that all the efforts of local people have paid off. Nearly 500 people objected in writing to this scheme, an almost unheard of number for a local planning application, and I am pleased that the Council Officers seem to have agreed with us that these plans were completely out of character with the surrounding area.

We have won round one - but we need to be vigilant to make sure that future plans of this sort don't slip through 'on the nod'"
