Lee Post Office put under Labour axe? - 23/02/08

Lee Post Office is under the threat of closure once again, listed as one of the 2,500 Post Offices that the Labour Government have targeted for cutbacks. This further assault on a valuable local service comes on top of the 9 Offices closed in Lewisham in 2004.

In the winter of 2003 Lee Green Conservatives led the campaign against the threatened closure of the Post Office at Staplehurst Road - despite public protests Post Office Ltd refused to listen to the views of local residents and closed it anyway.

In the light of this local Conservatives sought assurances over the future of the Lee Post Office. Post Office Ltd refused to give us this assurance and now our worst fears have been realised.

Local Conservative campaigner Brian Chipps said:

"Closure of this Post Office would mean that the elderly and disabled would have to travel further and queue longer to collect the benefits to which they are entitled, This will not only disadvantage local people but also run down the trade from businesses in the area"
