Downham faces By-elections after shock Lib Dem resignations - 7/01/09

Downham Ward is to face a double by-election following the sudden resignation of two local Lib Dems. Councillors Mark Morris (the Lib Dem Group Leader) and Simon Carter resigned on Monday 5th January. A by-election is expected in mid-February.

Both Councillors cited employment reasons for their resignations.

The resignations come just 7 months after appalling Lib Dem results in the London Mayoral Elections in May 2008 when Lewisham East Lib Dems trailed home in third place in every ward.

With Conservative Candidate Boris Johnson winning a majority in Dowham in last year's London Mayoral elections the by-election is certain to be hotly contested. Local Conservatives will be choosing candidates over the next few days.
