Britton condemns violence at Council meeting - 30/11/10

Cllr David Britton (Grove Park), the Leader of the Conservative Group on Lewisham Council, has condemned the violence that took place at last night’s Council Meeting.

Cllr Britton said:
“Last night’s disgraceful behaviour by some demonstrators did not stop the Mayor’s proposals for spending cuts being debated or approved.

“The violence shown towards the police and Council staff was appalling.  It was so unnecessary too – if the demonstrators had been peaceful they would have been allowed in to watch the debate.

“At a time when we are having to watch every penny and ensure what little we have is spent wisely, some of the demonstrators deliberately damaged Council property, which will cost the people of Lewisham more money to repair, as well as putting the public at risk, particularly when they threw a flare into the building.

“I would like to thank the police and Council officers for the work they did to protect Councillors and members of the public enabling this important meeting to go on. I also wish to commend my fellow members, of all parties, for the dignified way they conducted themselves, despite the circumstances and our clear disagreements over the spending cuts”.
